A walkthrough of Kigali International Airport car rental pickup — what to expect at arrivals, how delivery actually works, and the questions worth asking before you fly.
Kigali International Airport (KGL) doesn't have a row of rental car desks the way some bigger hubs do — most Kigali car rental companies, ours included, work on a delivery model instead. Here's what that means in practice.
Before you land
You'll want your flight number sent to whoever you're renting from, ideally 24 hours ahead. This isn't bureaucracy for its own sake — drivers track arrivals so the car is waiting rather than you waiting for the car, and flight delays get accounted for automatically.
At arrivals
Your driver meets you past customs, usually holding a sign with your name. The car itself is parked in the short-stay area a short walk away — not inside the terminal, since KGL doesn't allow rental vehicles directly at the curb for long waits. Expect the whole handover, including a quick walkaround of the vehicle and signing the rental agreement, to take 15-20 minutes.
What to actually check during handover
Three things worth doing before the driver leaves: photograph any existing scratches or dents (protects you, not just us), confirm the fuel level matches what's on the paperwork, and make sure you have a working phone number for roadside support saved before you drive off — Kigali's road signage improves every year but it's still not something to navigate on a dead phone.
Night arrivals
Most international flights into Kigali land late evening. Airport delivery runs 24/7, but if you're arriving well after midnight, say so when booking — it affects which vehicles are available on short notice, since not every car in the fleet is pre-positioned for airport runs at 2am.
One thing people don't ask but should
Whether the quoted airport delivery is actually free. It is with us; it isn't universal in this market. Worth a direct question to whoever you book with, since it's an easy line item to bury in a quote.
