The real document requirements for Kigali car rental — not the generic list every site copies, but what actually gets checked at handover and what trips people up.
Most lists of "requirements to rent a car in Kigali" read identically because they're copied from each other. Here's what's actually checked at pickup, based on what we ask for every day.
Your driving licence
A licence held for at least two years, in your name, not expired. If it's not in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it — not instead of it, Rwanda requires both together, which is a detail that trips up a surprising number of visitors who assume the IDP alone is sufficient.
Passport or national ID
For foreign visitors this is the passport you entered Rwanda on. We photograph it at handover; this isn't unique to us, every legitimate rental company in Kigali does the same for insurance and liability reasons.
Age
21 is the usual legal floor, but most companies, us included, set their own minimum at 23 without a young-driver surcharge above that. Under 25 with some companies means an extra daily fee — worth asking directly rather than assuming, since this varies more between companies than the age-21 headline rule suggests.
The deposit — this is where people get caught out
$200-500 depending on vehicle class, held on a card, refunded within 24 hours of return assuming no damage. The part that surprises people: this needs to be a credit or debit card that can actually hold a temporary authorization hold of that size. A prepaid travel card sometimes can't, which becomes a problem at the worst possible moment — during airport handover with a flight already landed.
What you don't need, despite what some sites claim
You do not need a Rwandan bank account, a local guarantor, or proof of onward travel to rent a car here. If a company asks for any of those, that's unusual enough to be worth a second look at who you're booking with.
