The Road Out to Nyungwe National Park

Spanning more than 1,000 square kilometres of the Albertine Rift in Rwanda's southwest, Nyungwe ranks among Africa's oldest and largest mountain rainforests. Chimpanzees, thirteen primate species in total, upward of 300 bird species, and biodiversity you won't find replicated elsewhere all call it home.

Reaching it from Kigali takes about 4 to 5 hours on the southern route through Butare. The journey itself runs through the southern highlands, past the Gisakura Tea Plantation that sits right on the park's edge.

We stock 4x4s suited to this particular drive. Roads are mostly paved, but the mountainous terrain still favours a vehicle with decent ground clearance — more so if you're travelling during either of Rwanda's rainy stretches.

Options include self-drive hire, chauffeured day trips, and multi-day itineraries pairing Nyungwe with Lake Kivu or other southwestern stops. Every vehicle travels with a spare tyre, emergency kit, and roadside backup.

What Makes Nyungwe Worth the Trip

This forest ranks among the planet's more significant biodiversity hotspots. While Volcanoes National Park pulls in the bulk of Rwanda's wildlife tourists for its gorillas, Nyungwe stays comparatively quiet — meaning smaller crowds and a closer, less rushed wildlife experience.

Few structures like the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway exist anywhere on the continent, and walking it suspended above the treetops is an experience in itself. Down on the forest floor, chimp tracking here holds up against the best anywhere in East Africa, with strong odds of a sighting.

Birders in particular will find plenty to love. Of the 38 bird species unique to the Albertine Rift, 29 turn up in Nyungwe, the Ruwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, and the elusive Shelley's crimsonwing among them. Ask a local guide about arranging an early forest walk if you're chasing the rarer sightings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Nyungwe Forest from Kigali?

You're looking at roughly 225 km southwest of the capital, which usually works out to a 4 to 5 hour drive depending on conditions. Most people go via Butare (Huye) and Gikongoro, a stretch that runs through some genuinely scenic tea country.

What type of car do I need to drive to Nyungwe Forest?

We'd steer you toward a 4x4 SUV, especially if you're travelling during the wetter months of March to May or October to December when the mountain roads turn slick. The RAV4, Prado, and Land Cruiser all handle it well.

What can I do at Nyungwe Forest National Park?

There's chimpanzee trekking, the well-known canopy walkway suspended 70 metres up, colobus monkey outings, birdwatching across more than 300 recorded species, and plenty of guided hikes through what's one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests.

Can I combine Nyungwe with a Lake Kivu trip?

Plenty of travellers do exactly that — Cyangugu, right on the lake, is only around 50 km from the park entrance. We can put together a multi-destination hire that covers Nyungwe, Lake Kivu, and other stops in the southwest in one go.
